Smoke Notes

New York band Scissor Sisters burst onto the Electroclash scene with their cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb", turning Roger Waters hit single from 'The Wall' into a sparkling disco anthem. Surely that would be their lot, a great cover and crap album right ? Well thankfully that's not the case, and Scissor Sisters have come up with an album that wears its influences on its sleeve, yet manages to sound like a lot of very good bands in the space of 11 songs. "Take Your Mama" sounds like 'Madman Across The River' era Elton John, a boogie woogie romp and not even a bit pompus. Okay most of the Scissor Sisters debut could be called a homage - the slick pop of opener "Laura" wouldn't sound out of place on Steely Dan's 'Can't Buy A Thrill', while "Mary" reminds one of the collaborations Bowie and Eno managed in the late seventies. This takes nothing away from the groups own personal abilities, in fact the songwriting shows a genuine ear for the hook, completely polished in a cool "classic pop" sort of way, and not the stuff you'd expect from a bunch of cool kids from New York. The thing that saves the album from its own cleverness ultimately is its sense of humour, some of the songs seem completely tongue in cheek - "Lovers In The Backseat" is so Bowie as to almost be satirical, the addition of pervy lyrics only adding to the enjoyment. The fact is the band do other bands better than those bands did themselves sometimes (and definitely do now), this is not an album of the already over used term "Electroclash", but rather a thrilling ride through some truly inspired seventies music, Chic, Moroder & Roxy Music, its all here and damn its good. Recommended.
