Brazilian's DJ Marky and XRS are part of a new movement in drum & bass that is both refreshingly funky and musically accomplished. Rich in ideas and not at all the "so dark its hilarious" sound most people associate with drum & bass, and alongside like minded producers Calibre, London Elektricity and Marcus Intalex, the duo have come up with a sound that has an appeal as wide ranging as "good" house music, with elements of jazz, funk and disco all thrown in the mix for good measure. 'In Rotation' is the duo's debut longplayer and over twelve tracks makes itself a contender for the finest drum & bass album of all time, with Marky & XRS proving that all the hype is completely justified. Opener "Highlights" perfectly represents the Brazilian sound, melody to die for, and breaks and bass that pulse along throughout the groove, completed by strings that Antonio Carlos Jobim would be proud of. "LK" samples "Carolina Carol Bela" by Jorge Benjor, creating a fusion of samba and breaks which is near perfect - it is a song we will no doubt call a classic in the years to come. "Sunshine (Touch Me)" is another truly brilliant moment, the soaring vocals of Jenna G proving her to be the best vocalist currently in drum & bass, while the disco influenced rhythm works as both a dancefloor monster and a late night groover. Other vocal cuts include "Moments Of Lust" with Vikter Duplaix, recalling the early house sound of Chicago's Mr Fingers, and "Breeze" which features Cleveland Watkiss. The duo also show another side to their sound with the inclusion of "Misto Quente" and "Tijuana Frogs" - "broken soul" at its very best, sounding a little like the work of Bugz In The Attic and Nathan Haines, mixing jazz with down tempo funk to stunning effect. 'In Rotation' is that drum & bass album you recommend to everyone (in the same way Roni Size & Reprazent's Mercury Prize winning 'New Forms' was), even for those who don't like the genre the quality here is undeniable and it has already found support from the likes of Gilles Peterson - as solid a recommendation as any contemporary music fan could ever want! An album you'll see on the end of the year's "best of" dance listings no doubt, this superb and fluidly funky album thoroughly deserves all the praise due to be heaped upon it. Recommended.
