Currently being grouped in with the "new commercial jazz sound" (Norah Jones and the like), nineteen-year-old Amy Winehouse is as much influenced by the likes of Lauren Hill and Erykah Badu (to whom she has been already compared - albiet a British version) as she is by say Dinah Washington and Billie Holiday, and based on this precocious debut this is no bad thing. Actually the thing that really hits you about Amy Winehouse (and continues to do so with every listen) is her voice - agile, luxurious, sultry, sassy, soulful, teasing, grieving - she could sing a Pizza Hut menu and it would sound like a beautiful lament! And aside from the "voice" the girl can write too, possessing an earthy dose of realism and humour in her lyricism. Musically the backing sits between intimate coffee-house jazz and original "nu-soul" loops and grooves, so that it swings and bops in just the right places. The resulting debut is quite simply exquisite, and once the rest of the world hears the stunning Amy Winehouse she will undoubtedly be a star. Really she will. Recommended, and destined to be one of the album's of 2004 I believe.
