Stalwarts of the "post-rock" scene, Chicago's Tortoise have always managed to avoid self indulgence, and unlike many of their contemporaries make experimental music that nearly everyone can enjoy. The groups sound is hard to describe - how do you find words to explain a band that can sound like the Grateful Dead and John Coltrane within a song, or John Cage and Soft Machine in the next ? In reality you just have to let the music speak for itself, and in Tortoise's case, they speak volumes. 'It's All Around You' is the groups fifth album, recorded over the space of a year in founder John McEntire's Soma Electronic Music Studios, allowing the members of the group, whom all have side projects, to lay down material then come back to it with other the members - the results then turned into this often brillant album. A mixture of atmosphere, modal jazz and free improvisation, 'It's All Around You', is a sonic journey through beauty, darkness, celebration and madness. This results from the meeting of so many individual ideas, guitarist Jeff Parker is without peer, while core members Doug McCombs, John Herndon and Dan Bitney are all celebrated musicians in their own right, and this melting pot is what makes Tortoise a cut above their peers. Highlights include "The Lithium Stiffs", the catchy "On The Chin" and closing "Salt The Skies", yet it is an album to be digested in one piece, and makes the most sense when you can give it your full attention - the rewards more than justify the time this may take. Perhaps the best experimental outfit of their time, Tortoise look set to continually astound with each release, and any listener with the patience and nouse to allow this band time to work their subtle magic will be well rewarded. Of course fans of this band already know this. Recommended.
