On the back her "demos" based debut 'Catalpa', plus success with former band The Be Good Tanyas, Texan-born Jolie Holland has quietly been making waves in the "discerning" pop world with her refreshing blend of folk, pop, jazz and blues (and some comparisons to jazz legend Billie Holiday). Actually with the likes of Norah Jones steering jazz in a more "roots" based direction, Holland and her unique songs (she describes them as "spooky American fairytales) could be well on the way to big big things. Tom Waits rates her (actually he is another good comparison for those looking for such things), and so do we. This is a compelling and highly original album, less lo-fi than her excellent debut, but still full of inventive ideas and a pleasing rustic style, 'Escondida' is simply quite exceptional. Recommended.
