With a life that fits every cliche of "country and western" music, 69 year old Loretta Lynn has seen and done it all, scoring countless hit singles and albums along the way. Lured out of retirement (apparently) by the White Stripes Jack White, who produces, plays and guest on the album, Lynn has released a fiery and demanding contemporary "alt-country" sounding work that certainly proves the country matriarch has plenty of creative life in them bones. All the songs are penned by Lynn, and lyrically she has plenty of bite, while White has formed a crack band for the sessions (The Do Whaters) which include himself on guitar, organ, piano, percussion, and blazing peddle steel and slide player Dave Feeny. The overall sound has plenty of ballsy "honky tonk" tempered with a little of the Stripes sonic garage attack, and while certainly more authentically "country" than the White Stripes this album will no doubt appeal to their many fans (Spin magazine quotes 'Van Lear Rose' as "the toughest record ever made by a former mainstream country artist"). For those coming at it from a "country" angle, the best comparison would be with the contemporary-influenced Rick Rubin produced Johnny Cash 'American' albums ('Unchained', 'Solitary Man' and 'The Man Comes Around'). The result, whatever your angle, is one mighty fine record that deserves to win Lynn a generation of new fans and plenty of credible critical acclaim. Hats off to Jack White as well for bringing this project together with such undeniable passion and style. Magnificent we say.
