Smoke Notes

No "difficult second LP" syndrome for Mike "The Streets" Skinner, no siree Bob. This is a bonafide, class A, best of the year level follow up to 2001's 'Original Pirate Material' that sets the bar for all other artists' releases in 2004 to Olympic gold medal levels. Skinner's street-level tales of the mundane, everyday minutiae that make up all our lives - or did in all our 20s anyway - are brilliantly illustrated, creating short films in your head that are so vivid they leap out at you, steal your cellphone and leave dirty footprints on the carpet. From the opening "It Was Supposed To Be So Easy" with its storyline of an afternoon's "to do" list going horribly wrong, to the closing "Empty Cans" about bored drinking in the middle of the day leading to stupid arguments and fights with friends, this is pure musical cinema verite. In the intervening ten tracks we get ill- advised drug use, the nature of addictions, girls who are "fit but my god don't you know it", girls who break your heart in public, girls who don't play fair in general (sensing a theme here yet?) and a couple of other issues that I'll leave you to discover for yourself. The musical backings for these tales of urban(e) stupidity are all understated, but nonetheless great in their own right, with grimey breaks and mad slow techno R'n'B informing many of them. So, with gushing praise from NME, Q, Mojo, The Face and even The Observer, The Street's looks set to be a permanent fixture in the end of year lists for at least the next wee while. An utterly totally essential purchase if you want to keep calling yourself a contemporary music fan in 2004. Highly, highly recommended.
