Final Straw from Snow Patrol is an album I just can't help but love. Conceived in Ireland and schooled in Glasgow Snow Patrol's wintery northern sound is a perfect companion to these dark and chilly days. As the title suggests Final Straw is a breakup album, a collection of songs dealing with the inevitable disintegration of relationships from the intimate to the international. Dark guitars build landscapes while singer/guitarist Gary Lightbody (who also fronts Reindeer Section as a side-project) expresses the profoundest of emotions using the simplest of lyrics, saving the real drama for the music around him. This is not an album to wallow with, sure it has it's fair share of harmony filled heartbreakers but this is an album with guts. Comparisons with Travis and Coldplay are inevitable and may be fair examples of this album's heart but they don't do justice to its soul. Snow Patrol come from good, hearty indie stock - they've been noisily kicking around the Glasgow underground for years and Final Straw is their third album, and their quietest yet. So don't be fooled, because underlying the glorious harmonies and hooks of Final Straw is a raucous indie spirit and closer likenesses should really be drawn with Sebadoh, My Bloody Valentine and Idlewild.
