Although now located in London, and with a debut album released on the outstanding British indie label Rough Trade, precocious 20-year old singer/songwriter Finn Andrews out of The Veils (he writes all songs, plays guitar and sings) was in fact born and raised in New Zealand (his father Barry Andrews was in UK pop acts XTC and Shriekback). Delivering this powerful and epic album, co-produced by Bernard Butler (ex-Suede guitarist), the Veils' major strengths lie in Andrews' stunning songs and outstanding vocal delivery - in fact it his distinctive voice that really hits you on first listen - resulting in The Veils being compared to various "pop" music heavy hitters (David Bowie, Patti Smith, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, etc). Although to this reviewer's humble ears, I think a more accurate comparison would be a meeting between such distinctly "English" sounding bands such as Echo & The Bunnymen, Coldplay and The Verve, and the late great Jeff Buckley. Anyway whichever way you lean, there are two quite certain things here - Finn Andrews is a ridiculously talented young man with a knack for writing and performing superbly grand pop songs - and The Veils' ' The Runaway Found' is an exceptional debut album. For "quick fix" highlights check out "More Heat Than Light", "Lavinia" and "The Tide That Left & Never Came Back" (I mean how's that for a song title ?). Recommended.
