The first album from The Brunettes was a surprise to many. Here was a "the" band without a grimy guitar, hotcake or pair of Chuck Taylors in sight. Instead they delivered an album of pop songs so sweet that it earned them the title of NZ's leading bubblegum pop band. Their new album Mars Loves Venus brings us more dessert like delights from the 50's nostalgia freaks. In fact this album plays like the soundtrack to a classic 50's "girl meets boy from the wrong side of the tracks" musical from start to finish. Earnest and innocent ballads, peppy boy/girl duets, and 50's machismo are served up with a sly touch of humour and a contemporary dark edge. The title track "Mars Loves Venus" is a classic boy/girl duet with The Brunette's trademark handclaps and glockenspiels. "Loopy Loopy Love", already a radio favourite, pairs simple lyrics with a simple melody for an unabashedly sentimental number. "Polyester Meets Acetate" is the standout track on this album and you'd be forgiven for mistaking this as a lost gem from the heyday of the "Dunedin sound". "You Beautiful Millitant" is a twisted love song benefiting from Heather Mansfield's expressive vocal range. "The Record Store" is the boy's number - pure 50's machismo. The finale "Your Heart Dies" leaves us wondering did their love story end happily ever after or did the girl run off with the keyboardist from Spandau Ballet? Copy Controlled.
