Smoke Notes

Born in Texas (where he was named after an Indian mystic), then relocated to Venezuela and Los Angeles, before heading to San Francisco under his own steam to study at the San Francisco Art Institute. In the summer of 2000 with music in his head Banhart moved to Paris where he began to play and record (on a borrowed four track and a friends answering machine !) in earnest. On moving back to the states his music somehow found its way into the hands of Michael Gira (of The Swans) and so the attention began. Although labelled as a "folk" artist (the acoustic guitar accompanied by vocal tends to throw you in that category) Banhart easily transcends that categorisation (like say Nick Drake for example) with a set of abstract but beautifully written songs, propulsive guitar plucking, trembling voice, and a demanding urgency in these "lo-fi" recordings (they were recorded in the living room of veteran engineer Lynn Bridges). Actually "lo-fi" isn't particularly accurate, these recordings are quite delicious and allow Banhart the freedom to really shine. Already beginning to get some pretty serious music press, along with comparisons to everyone from Billie Holiday to Beck (or how about a male version of recent indie-pop-folk discovery Jolie Holland ?), and I think we shall be hearing plenty more about this talented singer-songwriter and his superb debut 'Rejoicing In The Hands'. Recommended.
