Based on a quick glance at the name, or the label (Warp), the casual observer would be forgiven for thinking that this 1993 album from Gravenhurst is either dodgy death metal or blinky blink electronica. It is in fact neither, but rather the Brit-folk debut from one Nick Talbot. So what's it doing on the Warp label I hear all you electronica heads cry? Well if you look at current "alt-tronica" acts such as Fourtet or Manitoba, this dark and moody acoustic-based work isn't that far removed, mining as it does that troubled British folk inspiration that has brought us the likes of Syd Barrett, Nick Drake, Dandy Denny, Richard Thompson, etc. First listen will bring up obvious comparisons with those mentioned above, as well as Neil Young and Simon & Garfunkels more introspective moments, but further listening time quickly establishes Talbot as an artist of genuine emotion and depth (he also plays all instruments), utilising his delicate croon, subtle backing and malcontented lyrics to stunning effect. Certainly not everybody's "cup of tea", this album will however find a proud home with those who enjoy deep subtle troubled music of genuine depth. An outstanding find (can't believe I took so long to discover it in all honesty!), and watch out for the upcoming mini-album 'Black Holes In The Sand' with its stunning cover of Husker Du's "Diane"). Recommended.
