Currently the "great young international hopes" on New Zealand's Flying Nun, the Mint Chicks deliver a unique and compromising sound that will frequently compell and alienate. Reference points are many - although Buzzcocks, Fugazi and Mars Volta standout strongly - and this second mini album from the dynamic four piece is certainly more focused and melodic then the 'Octagon Octagon Octagon' EP, although fans will be pleased to know none of the trademark frenetic energy is lost. This young band certainly have something "special" going on, and definitely stand out as contenders for the international stage on originality alone. I gotta say, based on this second excellent release, I like where this band is heading - but be warned those who like their contemporary rock of the quieter persuasion - it isn't an easy listen (but then often the good stuff ain't). Recommended (and made to be played loud).
