Smoke Notes

Like fellow UK radio host turned album compiler Giles Peterson, BBCs Norman Jay (also behind the 'Good Times' series) is always a man you can rely on, and this double CD of classic soul, mellow disco and the odd modern piece of electronic deepness is no different, displaying a track listing youd sell your house for. Disc one features the likes of Barry White, Marvin Gaye and The Chi-Lites, representing the subdued nature of the first half of his Giant 45 slot. Disc Two picks up the pace a little with cuts from Aretha Franklin, Incognito and Quantic. Both contain those sort of life affirming moments you think you own but probably dont, and owe more than a nod to the British movements that have taken on Black American music - examples being Northern Soul and Acid Jazz. Most importantly though the album is simply two whole discs of good music and thats hard to beat. No bigtime DJ cutting the hell out of old records and becoming in essence the headliner here - Norman Jay manages to make connections not only between records but also through time and culture - a thing that helps this album rise above predictability and pure sentiment. Heartwarmingly satisfying and with some sweet sweet listening, this is the next best thing to listening to Giant 45 on a Sunday night in London. Recommended.
