Smoke Notes

Released in 2004, this album from Albuquerque's (New Mexico) most famous pop band snuck into my listening stack late in the year with a steady yet subtle grace, until suddenly "pow!" I couldn't leave it alone. Chief songwriter James Mercer writes unassuming and supremely melodic masterpieces of wit, poetry and emotional complexity, while the band (Mercer (guitar/harmonica), Marty Crandall (keyboards), Dave Hernandez (bass/guitar) and Jesse Sandoval (drums) deliver a perfectly sunny and suitably beguiling backing (think Big Star, The Kinks, Beach Boys, Nick Drake and Burt Bacharach all thrown in an "indie" blender). Actually it is the various musical backdrops that are truly the secret here, this album could easily have ended up an "over produced" Mercury Rev styled opus, instead the seemingly simplistic music simply enhances what are quite simply some of the best "pop" songs you will here anywhere. Don't be put off by them being on Seattle label Sub Pop, fans of "classic" traditional pop fare will be delighted with this darling record, and all you "indie" kids don't be scared away by the overt "pop" nature of The Shins latest effort, because this record is nigh on perfect, as superbly crafted as it is utterly compelling. A belated, but indispensable, addition to the "best of 2004", and comes highly recommended too boot.
