With little originality in the current world of mainstream hip-hop it's nice to hear a distinctive voice and fresh talent like Akon making waves with this truly unique release. Born in Atlanta but brought up in Senegal, Aliaune Thiam spent his formative years with his father, a well respected jazz musician who wanted his son to grow up in the rich and diverse world of African music. Akon returned to the US in his late teens and found it difficult to make his way in an environment that he simply did not fit into. Both these events seemed to have made a big impact on the young man and his music. His flow and singing are deeply rooted in the tribal rhythms of traditional North-West African music, yet his lyricism and attitude is heavily influenced by the impact of hip-hop on returning to the States. Opener "Locked Up" is the perfect example of this, with the song capturing both the grimey feel of southern hip-hop and the subdued balladry of something far more structured (his unique singing style is prevalent throughout this excellent album). "Bananza (Belly Dancer)" greets the listener with more of a club feel and shows Akon can both rap and sing, while handling production duties also, and in the process making exactly the music he wants you to hear. Further stand out material comes in the form of the reflective "Pot Of Gold" and self explanatory "Journey", yet unlike most contemporary hip-hop albums this is a record you can put on and enjoy in its entirety. This can be explained by the fact that no big name producers have been brought in to prop up other more "average" material, and can you think of another hip-hop record so completely developed by one artist? This gives 'Trouble' an edge and honesty you can't help but respect, and makes for an almost folk like quality. Add to this Akon's ability to tell a great story and you have one of the best hip-hop releases so far this year, and one that deserves to go far beyond the limitations of that genre. You are witness to the birth of an artist of the future. Recommended.
