It has been a lengthy break for the New Zealand duo (plus various cohorts) known as the Strawpeople, but based on initial listens to this new album, it would appear Paul Casserly and Chris van de Geer have never been away. Their production skills are of course top knotch (as any longtime fan can attest), and with 'Count Backwards' the songs have taken on a pleasingly deeper and somewhat tougher sheen. Of course it is the vocalists who really bring this album to "pop" life - longtime collaborator Fiona McDonald appears on three tracks ("You've Been On My Mind", "Running Away", "Rain"), Pearl Runga (apparently the most talented singer of the three sisters) on "No One Like You", Jordan Reyne on "Wire", Mahinarangi Tocker on "Winter" and Leza Corban on a cover of the Psychedelic Furs' hit "Love My Way". A pleasing return to form which will excite their many fans, this fine New Zealand album easily ranks alongside international pop-dance crossover albums from the likes of Faithless, Moloko, etc. Recommended.
