Damn this is a fine pop album! On the back of plenty of the "right" touring (support slots for The Strokes, Kings Of Leon, My Morning Jacket), the follow up to his critically acclaimed 2002 debut 'Sha Sha' sees Kweller about to launch into the pop world with some style. Teaming up with producer Ethan Johns (Kings Of Leon, Ryan Adams) is a stroke of genuis - his raw immediate southern rock kinda feel is the perfect foil for Kweller's slew of Ryan Adams-meets-Violent Femmes-meets-Pavement-meets-Lemonheads pop, punk and rock inspired songs. Actually the Ryan Adams comparison is a good one, not because he sounds especially like him (less vocal twang), but Kweller has the same knack for that perfect rough hewn pop gem. This tight little four piece, particularly Kweller (guitar, piano, harmonica) and guitarist Mike Stroud (recently heard on the delighfully kooky Ratatat album), add just the right amount of authentic flavour and bite to proceedings too. At just 22 years old, Kweller has a ridiculously bright future ahead of him. Ignore at your own peril music fans. Highly recommended.
