Smoke Notes

Murdered by his girlfriend in 1972, trumpeter Lee Morgan was at the time one of Blue Note's most popular artists. With the label since 1958, Morgan was a strong component in the birth of "hard bop", and always had the ability to bring together outstanding groups for his many recordings. The Sixth Sense displays that quality with the likes of Jackie McLean, Billy Higgins and Cedar Walton enlisted for a date in 1967, and also features a quintet session recorded in 1968 featuring Harold Mabern. The music is superb, straight ahead jazz at its very best, and though this may not be the most innovative jazz album of the time it is certainly a near perfect example of Blue Note jazz. The trio of horns from the 1967 date sound tremendous, Morgan's elegant yet shrill tone matched up against the beautiful lines of Jackie McLean and tenor man Frank Mitchell. Anti Climax and Short Count are as good as anything in the Morgan canon and are for that very reason essential. The 1968 session is narrowed down to three cuts, the best of which is Extemporaneous which was composed by Mitchell and includes some incredible bass playing from the suitably named Mickey Bass. Its Morgans unmistakable presence on both dates that makes the record rise above normality and jazz fans will be pleased to find this rare album seeing the light of day. Recommended.
