Much is expected of this second release from New York City's Interpol with the last year establishing them as one of "the" bands to watch in 2004. Like fellow NYC outfits The Strokes, The Rapture and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol play angular guitar based "indie pop" heavily influenced by the UK pop punk explosion of the 1980's (The Cure, Joy Division, etc) albiet with a serious nod to the contemporary spirit and energy of their home city (DFA, electroklash etc), and with their stunning 2002 debut 'Turn On The Bright Lights' scored massive indie sales of over 300,000 albums. So to the new album 'Antics', again produced by long standing cohort Peter Katis, finds this four piece delivering a body of work that simply expands with great success on their tried and true sound - angular guitars, oblique lyrics, studied intensity, brooding atmospherics and singer Paul Banks' gothic anthemic singing. The main difference would appear to be new found almost (almost I said!) colourful musical flourishes and a dark romantic subtly which gives this fantastic album a sense of excitement way beyond the first few listens. In fact this is 'Antics' true strength, with the dynamic songs opening themselves up to exhilarating discovery with each and every listen, until even the most demanding fan will not fail to be seduced. Actually this album reminds me a little of 'Document' era REM - no bad comparison I say. A ridiculously brilliant album and powerful artistic statement from a band that have just upped the anti for their fellow famous NYC cohorts. Highly recommended.
