Whether as guiding force behind his label Involve, or via his various musical making monikers (Signer, Aspen, etc), Bevan Smith is one of New Zealands leading lights in the making of contemporary avant-garde music. Having spent time touring through Europe and the US, Smith has gained recognition internationally way beyond many of our more popular local music makers, hence the release of this album on the New York label Carpark Records. This new release from his Signer alias (aided by HDUs Dino Karlis on drums, Matthew Mitchell and Andrew Thomas) will surprise many who pegged Smith as a purely electronic musician, or Signer as an exploration of tonal techno dub in the Basic Channel mould - although anyone who checked out the brilliant Compilation put together by Smith and released by Involve/Capital Recordings earlier this year will have glimpsed Smiths newfound desire to fuse the digital and analogue worlds. Grafting the spatial possibilities and minimal tonal electronica of early Signer work with some of his favourite indie influences (Joy Division, My Bloody Valentine, Laughing Stock period Talk Talk, etc) Smith has created an intriguing contemporary hybrid he likes to refer to as nu-indie. Sure it all sounds a little high brow I guess, but to these ears this music is as innovative as anything in the international indie scene right now, and for that alone Smith deserves major kudos. Long may his wilful and demanding experimentation continue I say New Zealand requires artists of Smiths calibre to hold up the music as art banner begun by the likes of Flying Nuns early elite. Recommended.
