New Zealand's Drum & Bass collective continues to grow and prosper at an incredible rate. Whether it is the international success of Concord Dawn and Bulletproof, or the eclectic innovations of Shapeshifter and The Upbeats, it's a scene of diverse artists making world-class productions. Add to that esteemed list a young man by the name of Agent Alvin, whose outstanding debut album delivers an abundance of breakbeat experimentation at its very best, and confirms this Wellington based producer as the man to watch. Warren Field to his mum, Alvin, unlike many of his contemporaries, shows an ability to tackle a multitude of moods, tempos and styles. Opener "All Around Us" rolls along with a certain Total Science-like influence, vocalist Meg Martin's suggestive lyrics creating a dreamy atmosphere over the layered breaks. Elsewhere "On The Rise" transports us to the sort of Dub party you only dream about, Spikey Tee lending his distinctive voice and flow to a track that is in essence the perfect roller. Field seems to enjoy challenging himself constantly, and the addition of a Zinc-like breakbeat cut shows another side, GND's Mc Kyla adding a lyrical edge to "Smut", while further vocal involvement comes care of Ruth Minuit on the superb "Saboteur" (to be released by Capital as a 12" in the very near future). "Freefall" must be the albums defining moment though, a beautiful slice of deep electronica that showcases not only Field's incredible drum programming, but also his ear for sweet melody and arrangement. A record that manages to keep your attention from start to finish is a rare thing these days, yet Field has produced a debut that flows along with ease, taking us on journey through the mind of one the hottest to come out this country in some time. Highly recommended (for all you drum, bass and breaks freaks out there).
