Their first album for major label Island (shock horror!) finds this talented and staunchly feminist New York trio attacking the mainstream with remarkable success. Over their two previous full length "indie" albums the trio have delivered suitably lo-fi danceable pop spiced with "new wave" ambition, and loaded with plenty of self-righteous radical feminist rhetoric. With 'This Island' it is the "new wave" ambition that really comes to the fore, "name" producers Nicholas Sansano (Sonic Youth, Public Enemy, etc) and Ric Ocasek (The Cars - contributing to the superb "Tell You Now") add genuine "pop" shimmer to proceedings without losing Le Tigre's trademark blend of indie-type dance and pop, and although Kathleen Hanna tones down her gutteral vocal punch in favour of some well worked tunes, there is still plenty of the feminist bite for fans. Actually apart from the pretty horrid cover of the Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited", few indie pop bands embrace the mainstream with this much success, or more importantly, credibility intact. Recommended.
