Smoke Notes

Grant Marshall (aka Daddy G) is one of the creators of what is today known as the Bristol sound - a layered, laidback, deep fusion of dub and reggae, soul and disco, funk and hip hop - most famously represented by Portishead, Tricky and of course his own outfit, the legendary Massive Attack. Prior to Massive Attack, and even before the Wild Bunch Sound System (which also gave us Tricky), Daddy G made his name as a DJ, playing an eclectic blend of dub, reggae, funk and angular post-punk rock. Fast forward to 2004, and Daddy G's career goes full circle as he delivers this fine DJ set for K7's legendary DJ Kicks series (other contributors have included the likes of Kruder & Dorfmeister, Nightmares On Wax, Kid Loco, Thievery Corporation, Rockers HiFi, Playgroup, etc). As you'd expect, the sound here is heavily reggae or "rock steady" based, whether it be more traditional tracks from Willie Williams, Johnny Osbourne and Barrington Levy, or the modernist dub and ska influenced works from the likes of French outfit Melaaz, Leftfield, Foxy Brown and Badmarsh & Shri. Things are all tied up with a couple of funk classics - the Meters "Just Kissed My Baby" and Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" (courtesy of a very rare Danny Krivit edit) - and of course a slew of tracks or remixes from Bristol's finest - Tricky's "Aftermath" (in original and rare white label form), sublime Massive Attack remixes of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Les Negresses Vertes, Massive Attack and Mos Def's propulsive and demanding "I Against I" (only available on the 'Blade 2' soundtrack), and two fine remixes of Massive Attack themselves (the delightful "Napoli Trip" version of "Karmakoma" and Paul Oakenfold's legendary "Perfecto" mix of the monumental "Unfinished Sympathy"). Cool, deep and deadly, this inspired blend of downtempo, dub, reggae and soul comes highly recommended.
