Cracking out of the same period of rock resurrection that brought us mighty debuts from the likes of The Strokes and The Datsuns, the young southern brothers (and their cousin) known as Kings Of Leon delivered a stunning debut in 'Youth And Young Manhood', then proceeded to conquer the western world by touring their collective asses off (they were one of the definite highlights of this year's Big Day Out). Like the above-mentioned Strokes and Datsuns, the boys were faced with that difficult second album problem - when the world adores you and demands you how do you find the energy, inner strength and inspiration to follow your first masterpiece? I don't think I would get many arguments if I suggested that perhaps both the Strokes and Datsuns struggled with their respective "difficult" second albums, and so perhaps on initial listen maybe the Kings Of Leon? But giving this fine album further air-time quickly dispels this thought - this young band have not only delivered on the promise of their fine debut - but surpassed it with delightful ease. Taking the Skynyrd and Creedence influenced southern boogie of 'Youth' as a starting point, the Kings Of Leon have added a murkier and rougher tinge to their sound, utilised a varied set of punky jerky arrangements (think spiky new wave "powerpop" meets fuzzy '70s stoner rock), and now simply ooze confidence and maturity as both songwriters and musicians. The resulting album, while requiring initial perseverance from the listener, ultimately delivers quite astounding depth, and is without a doubt one of the best rock records of 2004. And you know what? This young band are just gonna get better and better. Highly recommended.
