When this all-women outfit all called Donna first appeared a decade ago out of California's punk scene, they were quickly tagged a "rock chick" tribute to the Ramones, and while they certainly inhabited a certain blitzkrieg bop meets the Runaways pop world, it sold this determined (and very young) band way short. Since then they have slowly and effectively forged their way in the male dominated rock world, leaving their humble indie label beginnings to end up signed to Atlantic. Along the way they have released four albums (this is their fifth), none of them, until now, quite living up to their considerable live reputation and their undoubted charisma. 'Gold Medal' finds the band dropping the Donna surname tag for good (the band now go under their respective names, Brett Anderson - vocals, Torry Castellano - drums and backing vocals, Maya Ford - bass and backing vocals, Allison Robertson - guitar and backing vocals), and adding a decent level of rock "chunk" (think The Datsuns without the painful testosterone shrieking) to their supreme and straight forward rock'n'roll charms. Riff roaring "1-2-3-4" rock nuggets such as "Friends Like Mine", "Don't Break Me Down", "Fall Behind Me" and "It Takes One To Know One" still suggest the punchy guitar driven power-pop of the Runaways or Joan Jett's better solo work, while biting tracks such as "I Don't Want To Know (If You Don't Want Me)" or "It's So Hard" combine their considerable knack with punk-pop hooks with suitably barbed "finger in your face" lyrics. Simple yet perfectly effective, boisterous yet packed with irresistible "pop" charm, this aptly titled album finally finds The Donnas delivering the rock'n'roll riot they have always promised, and with supreme style. Recommended. (And for those planning on visiting the 2005 Big Day Out, check The Donnas out live, I would suggest they will kick the shit out of most of their illustrious male competition!)
