No prizes for guessing what this latest release from talented Wellington music maker Rhian Sheehan is all about - yep it's an album of remixes. Actually more specifically, it is an album comprising of various music makers (mainly from New Zealand) offering their reinterpretations of tracks taken from Sheehan's two albums - 'Paradigm Shift' and this year's 'Tiny Blue Biosphere'. More than just a "cash in", such remix projects when done properly offer a quite different dynamic to an artist's music, and serve to not only expand musical horizon's of their listeners, but also can often change the context, and thus appeal of the original works. So based upon my criteria does this project work? Well I am pleased to announce "yes", and with resounding success. Sheehan's subtle work lends itself particularly well to remixing, whether it be the deep intricate atmospheric interpretations from the likes of Hummel and Signer, the oddball electronic funk of Jet Jaguar and Germany's Turtle Bay Country Club, the gently propulsive work of Module (who contributes three remixes here) and UK's Interfearence, the stylish drum'n'bass of Agent Alvin (check his fantastic self-titled debut if drum'n'bass is your thing!), the house-meets-trance epics from Fiord (aka Antix), Ekto and epsilon-blue, or the engaging freaky pop re-rubs courtesy of Minuit, Gasoline Cowboy and The Phoenix Foundation, all certainly add something new and unique to the original works. Superbly put together by Sheehan and the folks at Loop, this set comes highly recommended (especially if you enjoy the contemporary end of the music spectrum). |
