Increasingly in the "pop" music world, "greatest hits" albums serve less as collections of an artist's "best" songs and more as blatant selling tools designed to seduce fans, who already own most of the tracks anyway via the addition of substandard "unreleased" tracks, second rate live interpretations and seemingly pointless remixes. Trust Mr Young to come to our rescue - this "greatest hits" set based on original record sales, airplay and known download history actually contains his "greatest hits", all digitally remastered of course. And so we have a tracklisting that includes the following outstanding Neil Young masterpieces, "Down By The River", "Cinnamon Girl", "Helpless" (with Crosby, Stills and Nash), "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", "Ohio", "The Needle & The Damage Done", "Old Man", "Heart Of Gold", "Like A Hurricane", "Comes A Time", "Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)" and so on. It is not often in today's music world that one can honestly say there isn't a "dud" track here, but frankly across the sixteen tracks here there really isn't. So if you have never really investigated one of the greatest musicians of our time, this is the perfect place, and even if you have, you really honestly couldn't put together a better collection of his songs in one place. Straight up - everybody should own this album. Highly recommended. |
