Smoke Notes

As part of Black Star (with Talib Kweli) or as a solo artist (the stunning 'Black On Both Sides'), Dante Smith aka Mos Def has established himself as one of hip hop's most distinctive and innovative MCs. Like recent excellent albums from Common and The Roots, Mos Def's latest album is an altogether more gritty and grimey affair, matching dense beats and sounds with uncompromising raps, and absorbing the funk and rock of black music's greats - Sly & The Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix and Marvin Gaye. Actually it is Gaye who Mos Def truly salutes here, taking the spirit and troubled soul of 'What's Goin' On?' and 'Trouble Man' and adopting to a difficult post 9/11 world. While production guests such as Easy Mo Bee, Psycho Les and Kanye West (on the excellent "Sunshine") appear, it is more the rock orientated guests that add to the real essence of this album - Raphael Saadiq on the opener "The Boogie Man Song", Shuggie Otis on the bluesy "Blue Black Jack", Paul Oscher on the outstanding "Bedstuy Parade & Funeral March", and the powerful Black Jack Johnson (Mos Def's own all-star black rock coalition featuring Will Calhoun, Doug Winbush, and Bernie Worell) who add plenty of fire and brimstone to tracks such as "Freaky Black Greetings", "Zimzallabim", "War" and "The Beggar". A potent and complex work, remarkable in scope and conscience, 'The New Danger' shows Mos Def is still miles ahead of many of his peers, making timeless "black" music with vibrancy, imagination and the utmost of vision. Highly recommended.
