While it is easy to criticise the legendary Snoop D-O-Double G of cruising through recent parts of his career, he has lately been responsible for some of hip hop's more appealing and successful singles - the Pharrell guesting "Beautiful" and "Drop It Like It's Hot" being the most obvious examples. And it is the Doggfather's willingness (and obvious monetary muscle) to work with others, which really brings much of this this latest album to life (as opposed to his often clichéd pimp-gangster sthick). Focusing on the 1970's-sound of rhythms, 'R&G' contains more clipped soul and smooth grooves than much of his previous work, with both Bootsy Collins and Charlie Wilson appearing on two tracks apiece, and a sample A-list including the likes of The Ohio Players, Edwin Starr, James Brown, Run DMC and Sade, further emphasizing this fact and overall sound. Ultimately though, it is the use of producers that matter in today's world of hip hop, and Snoop takes his pick, utilising the talents of big names such as The Neptunes (five tracks), The Alchemist, DJ Pooh, Soopafly, Lil Jon, Hi Tek and more, plus of course obligatory vocal guests including Pharrell, Lil Jon, Trina, Justin Timberlake, Nelly and 50 Cent. Highlights include the superb "Drop It Like It's Hot" (of course), "Can I Get A Flicc Witchu", "Step Yo Game Up", "Oh No", "Perfect" (this album's "Beautiful"), "I'm Threw Witchu", "Ups & Downs" and "The Bidness". The result, will still please his many fans, who can be safe in the knowledge that this is one of his more cohesive and better efforts to date. Recommended. |
