Despite its title, 'Get A Haircut: 31 Of The Best New Zealand Rock'n'Rollers Ever!', this compilation isn't a specific "rock'n'roll" collection, but rather one based on the history of the spirit and cultural rebellion of popular music in New Zealand. Kerry Buchanan nails it perfectly in his excellent liner notes - "this is rock'n'roll, the way it was, the way it is and the way it will always be. Thirty one cuts of Aotearoan pure rock'n'roll that instill pride, not just because they originate from here, but because they are just great rock'n'roll, noisy and belligerent celebrations of the culture we live in". So to that end, this superb set compiled by John Baker starts with the likes of Johnny Devlin and Max Merritt from the late 1950's, encompasses sixties acts such as The La De Das, Chants R&B and Ray Columbus, before tackling the punk explosion of the seventies and early eighties with The Scavengers, The Enemy, Proud Scum, Toy Love, The Spelling Mistakes and The Dum Dum Boys. With the late eighties things get a little "bogan" with the help of Flesh D-Vice (and the brilliant "Flaming Soul"), The Warners and Sticky Filth before heading to the late nineties and present day with Nothing At All!, Shaft, The Rock And Roll Machine, The D4, and of course The Datsuns. The resulting album, is not only a damn fine listen but also a superb overview of the history "garage rock" in New Zealand. Betcha many of you never realised NZ rock'n'roll was this cool! Highly recommended.
