Comprising of two principle players - Armistead Burwell Smith lV (ex obscure-but-good nineties "alternative" outfit 3 Mile Pilot) and Rob Crow (ex just-as-obscure-but-just-as-good "alternative" outfit Heavy Vegetable) - this San Diego band make highly original "alt-pop" that mixes new wave twists, perfect left-of-centre indie rock and sunny sixties pop into a highly beguiling and listenable whole. Influences range from The Beach Boys, The Police, Yo La Tengo, Pavement, through to current indie darlings such as The Shins and Modest Mouse, but Pinback never simply copy or replicate, rather they create vague maps or references within their mesmerising and sweetly melodic melancholic pop blueprint, delivering a work that the listener initially identifies with before discovering the band's own unique and highly original charm. In other words, don't be put off by how easy it is to get into this record, repeated listens open up warm and wistful energy which quickly becomes extremely addictive. Pinback, have quite simply, delivered a deceptively irresistible wee "indie" pop masterpiece. Recommended.
