A lovely two-disc house & soul music mix (plus a third bonus CD) from a DJ better known for his hip-hop turntablist abilities, Philadelphia-based Jazzy Jeff. Somehow, UK premier league label Defected, one of the few really successful specialist dance labels left along with Positiva, have gotten Jeff to put together a mix of solid deep house, interspersed with soul and disco tracks from Barry White, Kool & The Gang, The Temptations, Hamilton Bohanon, Third World and Cymande. These six classics are also included on a third bonus disc as stand-alone tracks with some good multimedia material as well. There’s no really flashy mixing or cutting going on that would lead you to believe that Jeff was one of the foremost exponents of turntable gymnastics, but this isn’t a bad thing. Often tricks like them don’t work in a house context, especially not in one so deeply low key in feel. The house music in the mix is all very much of a soulful, American flavour, the only glaring ones being the two Defected single releases which I’m guessing "had" to be included, they being DJ Gregory’s hard-hitting “Tropical Soundclash�? from 2003 and last year’s pointless update of Rhythm Is Rhythm’s techno anthem “Strings of Life�? as covered by Soul Central (hunt down the broken beat remix of this by Funky Lowlives for a proper re-interpretation). In all, a solid set from a DJ who knows their onions and a label that knows their niche. Recommended.
