Smoke Notes

Released just in time for their Big Day Out shows (apparently Australia and NZ get this album a week or so before the rest of the world), Tom and Ed Chemical have delivered a fine album (number five) that once again spans the pop and dance markets with consummate ease (after eleven years together and sales of over eight million albums you'd assume the duo have a pretty decent handle on things!) Although tougher and somewhat darker in sound than say the direction of the 1992 single "Star Guitar", the chemical duo continue to expand their trademark throbbing sonic blueprint with a smart subtly and effective utilisation of guest vocalists that seemingly satisfies their need to grow musically, without alienating their core fans. To that end, A Tribe Called Quest rapper Q-Tip turns up on the superb Middle-Eastern flavoured album opener "Galvanise", "The Boxer" features the Charlatans Tim Burgess, Mos Def's brother Anwar Superstar appears on another hip hop inspired number "Left Right". Elsewhere the chugging and plaintive "Believe" with Kele Okereke (vocalist for "next big thing" outfit Bloc Party) is quite brilliant, as is both "Hold Tight London" and the psychedelic tinged "Close Your Eyes" featuring newcomers Anna Lynne (from Trespassers Williams) and vocal harmony act The Magic Numbers respectively. Meanwhile tracks such as "Come Inside", "Shake Break Bounce", "Marvo Ging", and especially the epic album closer "Surface To Air", prove that even without "guests" the duo still have plenty of willing and intuitive sonic variation to share. Certainly no longer regarded as a "cutting edge" dance act, the Chemical's still inhabit a unique and intriguing pop-meets-dance world, and one in which they have very little consistent competition. I think the term "if it ain't broke don't fix it" covers things nicely, and for the most part, this album is a pleasure to recommend.
