Incredibly the idea for this movie based on the life of the legendary Ray Charles began its life way back in 1988 (can you believe they had trouble finding funding for this project?), and was finely completed shortly before his passing. To that end the movie (and this accompanying soundtrack) was made with the full involvement of the great man - the script was translated into Braille for approval, while the man picked to play him, Jamie Foxx (who is not only a considerable piano player in his own right but is frankly quite outstanding in the movie), went through a rigorous selection process including an initial and highly demanding two hour piano jam with the man himself (at the end of the session Charles stood up, hugged himself and shouted "he's the one…he can do it"). For those who know little of the life of Ray Charles, he wasn't born without sight but became completely blind at the age of seven following emotional trauma, and from then on, following a promise he made to his mother to "always stand on my own two feet and never become a charity case with tin cup in hand", he led an astonishing life in the music world which is simply without comparison. Spanning seven decades and 13 Grammys (plus other awards to numerous to mention), he was the only artist to ever have Top Ten hits in Jazz, Rock'n'Roll, Pop, Rhythm & Blues and Country & Western, wrote a number of songs that simply define American "pop" music, and ultimately inspired and influenced legions and legions of others. The music on this exceptional soundtrack, features the cream of his stunning Atlantic work, a couple of tracks from his essential 'Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music' album, and live material handpicked by the great man himself. The resulting album acts both as a perfect sampler of Charles' greatest work for those who have none in their collection (shame on you!), and for those who have seen this exceptional movie and been swept away by the genius of this legendary musician, is the ultimate and most fitting tribute possible to a man who simply has no equal. Highly recommended (as is the movie).
