While the legendary Ray Charles achieved much of his success via pop and r&b, he also had considerable and credible success in the country, jazz and blues fields. Hailing from Greensfield, Florida he had assimilated much of the rich southern musical heritage of the Negro and its blues stories, folk songs and gospel revelations (all of which became key ingredients in Charles' later r&b and "pop" hits). This resulting, and utterly gorgeous, remastered Atlantic release from 1961 focuses on this southern influenced blues-orientated side of Charles, and again features a side to Charles too-seldom-seen. Other than his superb treatment of the classic "The Right Time" most of this material is relatively obscure, with seven of the twelve tracks penned by Charles himself (other material comes from Louis Jordan, Sam Sweet, Eddie Jonesand country singer Hank Snow), and as you would expect the backing tends to be lush and horn led (and of course arranged to perfection by the great man). Probably closet in sound to say Charles Brown (undoubtedly an influence who first made his name in the 1940s), this album is yet another reminder of how the great man will be missed. Recommended.
