Half of the New York production team and label known as DFA, James Murphy has certainly been making all the right moves in the contemporary "pop" world, and this debut from his musical alias, LCD Soundsystem, confirms his place in the creative elite. Along with The Rapture, the LCD Soundsystem has always had the commercial punch amongst the DFA roster, with Murphy's modern take on "punk funk" (punk rock's rigid rock'n'roll format colliding with the likes of disco, dub and early electronica - Gang Of Four, Liquid Liquid, PIL etc) an inspiring and engaging revelation. Elements of the Fall (particularly Mark E Smith's vocal sensibilities), Talking Heads, Pink Floyd, Brian Eno, the Beatles and even the mechanical energy of acid house, all liberally appear throughout, while Murphy's smart slogan like songs are lyrically full of humour, clever "hipster" sarcasm, and most importantly, genuine heart. The resulting expansive set is a fearless journey into pop music's future, as were many of Murphy's influences before him (see above), and as such belongs in every forward thinking music fan's collection. A perfect debut, and highly recommended. |
