Smoke Notes

It has been a lengthy break since Breaks Co-op's 1997 debut 'Roofers', but then Zane Lowe (along with Hamish Clark, the driving force behind this NZ outfit) has been a busy man. Lowe first sprung to musical fame as part of early kiwi hip hop outfit Urban Disturbance, before moving onto the more mature and breaks orientated Breaks Co-op, heavily influenced by British "trip hop" (Massive Attack etc) and the likes of DJ Shadow. In the late '90s Lowe relocated to the UK where he has since found considerable fame on radio (as part of BBC1 and hotly tipped to replace the legendary John Peel) and television (daily show Gonzo on MTV2). This follow up to 'Roofers', recorded at Lowe's Kentish Town studio, where utilising time between shows, Lowe and Clark put together a work which began life as a Roofers-type instrumental thing, with a plan to utilise numerous guest vocalists. However once Lowe decided to sing on the album opener (and album title track) "The Sound Inside", things quickly began to move in a definite song-based direction, cemented further by the addition of British singer Andy Lovegroove (from UK outfit the Away Team). Surprisingly, given its origins, this album has a very open spiritual feel to it, with gorgeous melodic songs based around smooth glacial breaks, acoustic guitar, and all complemented perfectly by Lovegrooves gorgeous folk-meets-soul falsetto. First single "The Otherside" (which you all should have seen or heard by now) is a pretty decent indicator of the new soulful melancholic direction, while sumptuous tracks such as "Settle Down", "Duet" and "Lay Me Down" offer delicious variations on this languid theme. Those looking for a description should think along the lines of a combination of TrinityRoots, Blind Faith and Lemon Jelly, but descriptions aside, this is simply a gorgeous sun-baked "pop" record. Comes with the highest Smoke CDs recommendation. Copy controlled.
