This debut album from The Mint Chicks rounds out a trio of albums (D4, The Shocking Pinks, The Mint Chicks) from New Zealand's prestigious Flying Nun, which finds the label once again moving in a pleasing "indie" direction. The Mint Chicks are the hardest to peg, the most avant-garde of the trio, and despite their best efforts to alienate all and sundry by being total prats, the most musically exciting of the three. While previous EPs/singles have shown the obvious potential (and uncompromising nature - no commercial radio pandering from these guys) of this four piece outfit, it is with this debut album that their blistering blend of Buzzcocks inspired pop, sonic art metal and bruising hardcore makes thrilling and perfect sense. The band move effortlessly from straight up chorus-led blitzkrieg pop to barely controlled (or should that be barely controllable) cacophonic sonic mayhem, interspersed with occasional and delightful blasts of, dare I say it, subtle musicality - and frequently just within the one song! Certainly a challenging listen, calling it "experimental" however is doing both the band and the album a massive disservice. This is thrilling and frequently melodic hard-assed "pop" music, that while seemingly unravelling before your very ears, will suddenly pull back on the point of dissolution reclaiming both song and structure with arrogant precision. For those who like to see track favourites with their reviews try "F**k The Golden Youth" (yeah I know it's a single but for some reason it makes more sense as part of the album), "A Quick Show Of Hands", "Opium Of The People", "Take It, I Don't Want It", "My Arpeggio", "I Don't Want To Grow Old" and album closer "You're Bored Because Your Boring", but for ultimate satisfaction please listen to this album as a whole, and listen to it LOUD. Chaotic, exciting, noisy and enthralling, this is modernist pop music at its best, and much like classic Flying Nun releases from the likes of the Tall Dwarfs, Verlaines and The Gordons, belongs firmly on the world stage. Highly recommended.
