Third album proper from Andrew Spraggon's Sola Rosa, and as the title suggests, "Moves On" is a step onward and surely upward for Spraggon, who has already garnered attention from abroad with vinyl releases and compilation appearances on prominent labels such as Guidance and Ministry of Sound.
Spraggon took the first tentative steps as a solo electronic artist while he was playing bass in Shayne Carter's Dimmer, with two independently released ep's ("A Starter for 4" and "Enterance To Skyway") before truly arriving with the "Solarized" album in 2001 and it's follow up, 2003's "Haunted Out-Takes".
"Moves On" shows Spraggon ain't nobodys side man. He leads a plethora of guest musicians (including Nathan Haines and former Thompson Twin now International observer Tom Bailey), effortlessly shifting from the cut up DJ Shadow style hip hop of "What If" and "Deadman Walking" (with scratching provided by Mr. Manuel Bundy) to the dubby dancehall of "Breezes Blowing" (made all the more convincing by guest vocalist Paul St. Hellier aka. Rhythm & Sound and Kruder & Dorfmeister collaborator Tikiman) and "Dangerous Dub" all interlaced with the dreamy samples and jazzy organ and horn stabs that have become Sola Rosa's trademark.
More than previous Sola Rosa releases, "Moves On" has a more organic feel of being played by actual musicians rather than a guy making music on his laptop even when its not always the case, which is a credit to Spraggon as a producer and musician (before playing in Dimmer, he fronted sonic rockers Cicada). This also bodes well for the possibility of a Sola Rosa band when it comes time to tour this record. An excellent downbeat listen, up there with Tosca's recent "J.A.C" release. Recommended
