"Veteran" is a term bandied about rather freely these days (almost as much as the classic "Legendary"), but if anyone deserves the mantle in this country it's Taranaki's Hardcore pioneers Sticky Filth; celebrating their 20th anniversary (!) together this year, they release album number three - "Stainless".
Packing 15 new songs (plus 2 remixes by Concord Dawn), "Stainless" is a relentlessly heavy but still hugely melodic Hardcore/Metal album which retains the classic 'Filth sound - Craig Radford's driving Bass and Chris Snowden's furious riffing - yet manages to sound fresh and contemporary without even trying.
This is crossover metal every bit as good as Suicidal Tendancies (Radford's barking vocals at times bring to mind ST's Mike Muir), Corrosion Of Conformity or even Biohazard - and if there's any doubt, one listen of "Flesh" or the stonking "Jahbullheboosay" should be evidence enough!
The current vibrancy of the local Punk, Hardcore and Metal scene is due in no small part to the trail that SF have blazed over their long career - they've seen musical trends come and go, but stuck to their guns and "Stainless" is surely the fruit of all the years of labour these guys have put in.
To show they're not afraid of branching out, and also as an acknowledgement to how far-reaching their influence is in modern NZ music, "Stainless" also contains two album tracks given the banging Drum n' Bass remix treatment by Concord Dawn - crossover in the truest sense of the word, and worth the purchase price on their own!
