The Godfather (or at least great uncle) of NZ R&B/Hip-Hop returns after an abscence of four years, in which time we've seen an explosion in the popularity of pacific flavoured urban music that has made stars out of the likes of Scribe, Savage and Nesian Mystik. With this, his third solo effort, Che can take his rightful place next to the big names.
After spending 12 years solidly doing music, starting as co-frontman of funk-rockers Supergroove before breaking out as a solo artist with the outstanding "Chains" (with DLT), it was time to take some time out and be a dad to his three sons. Listening to this album it is apparent that music was still on this man's mind during that time out - thinking about new areas to explore musically and sonically - and this record certainly succeeds in pushing boundaries.
"Beneath The Radar" does make for a more challenging listen than it's multi-platinum predesessors (1998's 2b S.pacific and 2001's The Navigator), but ultimately a much more rewarding one. The songs are built around rather unconventional and disjointed beats (or "beat-mess" as Che refers to it), and elements of Reggae, Jazz and Hip-Hop are thrown into the mix, but when that voice hits, all those elements are pulled together, and seem to make perfect sense. His vocal style has become, without a doubt the blueprint for R&B and Roots singers in Aoetearoa and listening to him sing - particularly on opening track "Control Tower" and second single "Lightwork" - is like being greeted by an old friend. Such is the warmth and familiarity in his creamy toned voice. A welcome return and absolutely Recommended.
