Sure, bands like Interpol and The Rapture may have built the initial snowball that is the renaissance of jerky 80's new wave flavoured rock we're currently experiencing. But it's fair to say this Glaswegian quartet really got it that snowball rolling with last year's self-titled debut - bringing hit singles like the super-catchy "Take Me Out" to the mainstream- and causing a proverbial avalanche of bands starting with "The" to trade in their tight denims and retro t-shirts for designer suits and skinny ties. A slightly exagerated and cynical observation maybe? Then again, maybe not - just check out how many bands we've compared to these guys in the last year or so!
Where bands like Interpol and more recently Editors occupy the more dour and dramatic end of this particular musical spectrum, Franz Ferdinand came from the upbeat and cheeky - more in common musically with Devo and Gang of Four than Joy Division and the Cure.
For album number two not a lot has changed stylistically, but by no means is this simply a repeat of their first album. Constant touring has meant they've honed their uptempo, well-starched sound and on songs like "What You Meant" and "I'm Your Villain" - which are every bit as strong as any of the singles off the first album - take the catchy angular thing to a new level. There are also glimpses of a side of Franz Ferdinand not seen previously in "Eleanor Put Your Boots On" and "Fade Together" - a couple of almost Beatlesy numbers, in which the electric guitars are put aside in favour of piano and acoustic guitar.
Thankfully the wait for a follow up has been a relatively short one (if only more bands would follow this example!), striking while the iron is hot as it were. Franz Ferdinand certainly don't rest on their laurels and have produced a strong sophomore album that hopefully hushes the nay-sayers who cried "one-hit wonders".
It looks like skinny ties might be around a bit longer yet! Recommended.
