Smoke Notes

How would you describe this band to the uninitiated? They arrived internationally with their second album, 2000's Agaetis Byrjun which on first listening sounded like music from another planet - a sub-aquatic world inhabited by pixie-like alien creatures (perhaps similar to the angel-winged baby alien that graced the album's cover). Vocalist Jon Thor 'Jonsi' Birgisson sung in a foreign language, not his native Icelandic but one of his own invention he called 'Hopelandish', claiming it derived from the language of the "little people" – the fairies and elves which legend have it inhabit the volcanic landscape of Iceland.
It all sounded a little bit "out there", but it was nothing compared to the experience of actually hearing Birgisson sing for the first time on the albums opening track "Svefn-G-Englar" – amongst the bowed guitar his voice was perhaps the most inhuman and androgynous sounding thing to ever exit a man's mouth! For the discerning music fan, Sigur Ros became one of the most vital and important bands of the new millennium (along with Radiohead who's Kid A was released not long afterwards), as far setting a new precedent for how modern music was made and also perceived.
Much was expected of the next album, 2002's snappily titled "( )" – perhaps a little too much. Still a fantastic album - and if it were by any other band, it would be their career-defining statement - it succeeded in exposing the band to the mainstream with celebrities like Coldplay's Chris Martin and wife Gwyneth Paltrow (who's child entered the world with Sigur Ros playing on the hospital sound system), to Motley Crue's Tommy Lee (who - always the charmer - reckons it's "great music to f**k to") namedropping the band in the press. But for those whose world was altered upon hearing Agaetis Byrjun for the first time, there was almost a slight sense of disappointment.
Listening to album number four "Takk", disappointment is the furthest thing from your mind. Sigur Ros have refined their sound; marrying the organic and reverberated elfin soundscapes of Agaetis Byrjun with ( )'s electronic experimentation and orchestral grandeur. The results are stunning - This could well be the masterpiece they've been promising for so long.
There seems to be a conscious effort by the band to shorten the songs, perhaps a move toward making Sigur Ros a more accessible band? It is quite conceivable tracks like "Glosoli", which erupts in an anthemic crescendo, and the rocking "Gong" will be played on commercial music television or radio in the very near future. Birgisson has also opted to retire hopelandish in favour of standard Icelandic - "Takk" being Icelandic for "thanks" - although I'm a little confused as to who they're thanking and why – surely it is us who should be thanking them. Highly Recommended
