Smoke Notes

A live album from the clown prince of alt-country - Aptly, as the title suggests, recorded while on touring the heart of America's Bible Belt.
In a relatively short time (a little over a decade) Oldham has become almost something of a mythical figure in the "New" country/Americana/call it what you will scene, receiving praise from old hands like Emmylou Harris and Johnny Cash (the latter covering Oldham's "I See A Darkness" on his last album American IV: The Man Comes Around).
This is due, at least in part to Oldham's prolific - to the point of daunting – back catalogue, recording under the many Palace guises (Brothers, Songs, Music), his own name and for the past few years – the Bonnie "Prince" Billy moniker. But even more impressive than the shear quantity of his work is it's quality – there's hardly a dud in the lot.
The material on "Summer In The Southeast" spans Oldham's colourful past, and even a song from last year's wonderful Superwolf album.
With a full band in tow (including brother Paul on bass and guitarist extrodanaire and fellow Superwolf Matt Sweeney) Oldham and co. rip through classics like "Pushkin", "Madeline Mary" and of course "I See A Darkness" in suitably ramshackle fashion. With four guitarists, many of the songs take in a drunken southern rock direction, helped in no small part by the rowdy crowd of what sounds like genuine down-home southern folk! So when the band pulls back for "...Darkness", "Nomadic Revery" and "A Beast For Thee" the songs standout due to their minimal and introverted performances.
No doubt "Summer In The Southeast" will give an idea of what to expect when Mr. Oldham once again graces our shores in the coming weeks.
