Smoke Notes

As the title suggests, a compilation commemorating what many are now calling NZ's best summer music festival. The range of artists and styles featured here is something quite different from the folk at Loop. Although the usual Loop suspects are represented inFly My Pretties, Recloose (feat. The ever-present Joe Dukie), Module and Hollie Smith but investigating the tracklisting further reveals several pleasant anomalies in Pluto, The Mint Chicks, Phoenix Foundation as well as rock veterans Shihad!
While Hollie and Joe will always stand out in a crowd, if like myself you're an old rocker at heart, the absolute highlight here has to be Shihad. Even more surprising than the band even appearing on a Loop Compilation, is the track they've chosen – "Get Up" which closed their mighty Killjoy album, sounds just as vital today as it did 10 years ago. An overlooked classic from the band, this really has to be one of the best songs of their career.
The mix works surprisingly well, giving those not fortunate enough to attend some idea of what a fantastic day they missed. And for those who did make it down to the vineyard, this CD will serve as a pleasant reminder of the good times had and good music heard. Recommended listening.
