Smoke Notes

Rolling piano lines, lilting melodies, clever string and horn arrangements and that distinctive voice - if you didn't know any better, you'd almost think the Able Tasmans had reformed and put out a new album. And if you had thought that, you wouldn't be too far wrong. Humphreys and Keen were the two main songwriters for the 80s/90s Flying Nun band, and have they've roped in former bandmates Jane Dodd, Craig Mason, Ron Young and Leslie Jonkers for various musical duties, synthesizer support and cover art.
Here they traverse familiar Able Tasmans ground: the instantly recognisable piano-driven pop gem ('Calshot Spit'); a heavily orchestrated epic ('You Too'); and even a countryesque pedal-steel lament ('The Liquor Talking'). They even take a little time out for a nice little string quartet interlude ('Miles') that is reprised on the album's 'final' track '12,000 Miles' (and which also contains the increasingly popular 'hidden track' - a rocking wee tune tucked away after a couple of minutes of silence).
Make the most of this release, as we aren't expecting any more material from the duo in the near future. Vocalist and lyricist Peter Keen now spends half of each year aboard the UK's Oceanographic Institutes's research ships ('The Discovery' and 'The Charles Darwin') monitoring deep ocean currents, and songwriter Graham Humphreys leads a double-life as Graeme Hill - Sports Cafe presenter and writer for various TV series, including Eating Media Lunch and The Unauthorised History of New Zealand.
A great album for existing fans of the Able Tasmans, and an excellent introduction to those who haven't yet discovered the delights to be found in the Keen and Humphreys songwriting partnership.
