Another typically inventive, eclectic and pop-laden album from Chris Knox, who has shown with his previous solo releases Beat, Yes! and Seizure that he's not afraid to mix things up a little (if not a lot) when it comes to genre and style.
'A Faded Postcard in the Sun', for example, is a heart-felt ballad that Knox positively croons through, after which the albums jumps into heavy metal stomper 'Dougnut', then later 'Outta Here' - a sneering rock anthem that wouldn't seem astray in an Oasis setlist. The album even has its own version of Knox's most well-known song -'Not Given Lightly' - where he recycles the well-known strumming pattern and guitar sound of the older track to play backing for the slightly less optimistic tune 'World Without a Sun'.

One notable develoment on this release is Knox's use of a 'proper' band (his first since Toy Love, a quarter of a century ago). The able and talented rhythm section pairing of Jol Mullholland on bass (usually singer/songwriter/guitarist for Gasoline Cowboy) and Stefan Neville on drums (of one-man-band phenomena Pumice) are The Nothing. Along with a cohort of extra players for some string and horn embellishments, The Nothing rein in some of Knox's more experimental tendencies, and deliver a more coherent and sonically richer sound than some of his previous 'man-in-a-small-room-with-a-four-track' efforts.
The album contains a whopping 17 tracks - ostensibly an album and an EP (split by the obligatory track with ten minutes of silence tacked onto the end). As Knox himself points out, with so many tunes: "You'll find yr own faves." Recommended
