2006 looks to be the year the producers take over. First Juse releases his debut and now John Chong-Nee steps out on his own having made a name behind the scenes as a first-rate producer for a range of artists as diverse as NZ's first "Idol" (whatever happened too...) Ben Lummis to Deceptikonz, Che Fu and even good old Dave Dobbyn.
As well as being able to lay claim to more number ones than most, Chong-Nee's skills as a composer were shown when he co-wrote Dei Hamo's "We Gon' Ride" (which incidentally, was the biggest-selling single of 2004 in NZ).
On Just Getting By On Love, Chong-Nee masterfully blends smooth-as-silk R&B with what has now become a distinct Pacific-flavoured Hip-Hop. With a sympathetic ear to the analogue-era Soul that has inspired him - rather than today's preferred Pro-tools/digital recording methods, Chong-Nee laid the tracks for this album down onto tape. Such attention to detail has paid off - the resulting album may well see him surpass many of the artists he's helped to the top.
As well as featuring a who's-who new and upcoming artists Chong-Nee has worked with, Just Getting By... also sets a precedent for the genre with appearances by seasoned and respected NZ musicians such as Martin Winch and bass legend Billy Christian (from The Invaders and Headband amongst many others).
Featuring "Thin Line", "Scenarios" and his latest single "Black Widow" this album is a must for any self-respecting fan of the Urban-Pacific sound or Hip-Hop and old-school R&B/Soul in general. Whether it's Che, King Kaps, Nesian Mystik or Al Green, Just Getting By On Love has something for everybody.
