If their career-defining performance headlining the 2004 Glastonbury festival signaled they were ready for "big leagues", Black holes And Revelations announces Muse's arrival into that exclusive (and for most bands - elusive) upper-echelon of rock's elite - rubbing shoulders with U2, Radiohead and Coldplay.
Their fourth album and the follow up to 2003's massive Absolution, sees the band taking their peculiar brand of Prog-pop to new heights. The Devon trio hone their existing sound and at the same time pull a few new tricks out of the bag. The album takes a surprising turn towards the end and heads into an unexpected yet welcome Spanish-tinged country direction (a la Calexico); the gentle piano lilt and brushed drums of 'Soldier's Poem', Mariachi horns ('City Of Delusion') and Surf-guitar ('Knights Of Cydonia') show Muse aren't past experimenting with fresh ideas.
First single 'Supermassive Black hole' - with it's stomping rhythm and futuristic sound sees frontman Matt Bellamy adopting a Prince-like falsetto to great effect. Another standout is the album's closer 'Knight Of Cydonia', which as mentioned, starts as a surf ditty, progressing into Queen territory with a three part harmony vocal bridge, before exploding into a riff-o-rama that will have the stadiums steaming when they take these songs out on the road.
The time taken to record is evident here, with the band previously stuck in a tour/write/record regime that meant rushing in the studio to meet deadlines. With more clout on the back of Absolution and their Glastonbury triumph, the band was able to spend as long as they needed making this record. This is reflected in Black Holes..., to put it quite simply this album is massive in every respect – production, songs and, I'm sure in a short while, sales figures. This will be the one they'll be remembered for in years to come. Recommended.
